Locally-targeted advertising
Want people to find you easily? Want to know search patterns and how they are interpreted?
When you’ve heard that about 30 to 40 percent of all searching on the web is done with local intent, it’s prudent to try to understand how to make it work for your business.
A search aimed at finding something within a specific geographic area, for example: “car dealer in Miami Florida” or even more specifically “car dealer on palmetto highway Miami” are what most people think of when you think of local searching. Most often this is done with the intention of buying something offline
For some brick-and-mortar businesses, all searching is local search. Most of these types of are hyperlocal enterprises that only draw customers from within a specific area. Examples of these are beauty salons, pizza parlors, and dry cleaners. Most likely a searcher intends to purchase from a location nearby.
Although a company may be in a specific location, the people searching for them may likely be quite a distance away. While potential customers are not currently in this immediate area, they plan on being there some time in the future. Examples are resorts, car rental agencies, and convention centers.
Some enterprises draw clients from both nearby and far away. Examples of these are consultants, hospitals, household movers.
As you can see, just about anyone who conducts any business offline can be impacted by local search.
We know that search engines are committed to returning the most relevant possible results for every query. If Google is fairly sure the searcher is looking for a local business but isn’t positive which business is most relevant, it will display a few local results at the top of the listings with phone numbers and links to more information at Google Maps.
Smart businesses will set up well-optimized Internet sites (including mobile sites) so that when queried they will rank above the others. Keyword selection becomes critical here.
Searches for local businesses take place at other sites as well such as the Internet Yellow Pages, Craigslist, Insider Pages, Kudzu, Citysearch, and forums, too. Depending on the type of business, searchers may use topical directories, such as BedandBreakfast.com, or vertical search engines like BookFinder.com.
As you can see, local search effectiveness involves determining how customers search for you, where they search for it, and how the possible outcomes are displayed.
